Cleve and Mary are just 7 years old and living at a Pittsburgh orphanage, when they say “I do” to each other, at a make-believe wedding. Not only do they say it, they mean it -and what’s more, believe themselves married in the eyes of the Lord. A year later, both are left heartbroken – Cleve is torn from Mary’s arms and taken away, adopted by a family from Montana. Ten long years pass, and Cleve is too afraid even to love, his losses having hardened his heart. But Mary too has her problems – her arm has been crushed in a mangler, and she’s been cast out into the street, almost penniless, to fend for herself. When Mary is shown a letter from a man who seeks a mail order bride, and sees that the man’s name is Cleve, she knows it’s a sign from the Lord – and that whether it’s her Cleve or not, she knows she must go to the man. But Mary will need every bit of her faith to travel the path God has laid before her. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.
