The Bear Creek Ranch in Montana thrived during the 1890s, thanks to their horse breeding program that provided many horses to the military. Brad and Sarah welcomed their first child, a son named Caleb, in 1882. Maryellen, now 17 years old, exhibited strength and sassy that resembled her stepmother’s personality. At the birth of Caleb Saunders, Maryellen was 8 years old, Caleb was mindful and supportive of all of the things his mother wanted and the agriculture that it took to do. He wanted to do what was required of him and his chores. He didn’t mind working with the horses and cattle but he was not that interested. Much of Caleb’s time was spent learning the geology of the agriculture of the land. What it would take to grow the feed for the cattle and horses. His secret wish was to go to school and learn what it would take to grow food for the animals, with his half-sister he would always be second. Caleb never felt he fit into the Bear Creek Ranch.
