“Margaret was not a ready lover, but where she loved she loved passionately, and with no small degree of jealousy.”

North and South by popular English author Elizabeth Gaskell is a Victorian romance novel first published in 1855.
The novel is set in the gritty, northern town of Milton during the mid-19th century England, amidst the throes of the Industrial Revolution. Against this vivid backdrop of factories, soot-covered streets, and bustling commerce, the story explores the explosive tensions between the industrial north and the more genteel south.
Margaret Hale is a strong-willed and independent young woman who was raised in the south of England. When Margaret’s father, who was a minister, decides to leave the church and move the family to Milton, she is thrown into a dirty, strange world of factories, industrial conflict, and social unrest.
Throughout the novel, Margaret must navigate the complexities of her new surroundings, while also struggling with her own growing feelings for John Thornton, a wealthy mill owner and fierce opponent of the striking workers.
Through Margaret’s eyes, Gaskell looks at the complexities of industrialization, class conflict, and gender roles while telling a compelling and deeply moving love story.
North and South is a thought-provoking and romantic tale that explores themes of class conflict, gender roles, and the effects of industrialization on society. Elevate your reading comfort with our large print paperback edition, designed with you in mind.

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810–1865) was an English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She was born in London but spent much of her life in Manchester, where her husband worked as a Unitarian minister. Her writing was influenced by her social and political beliefs, and she often wrote about the struggles of people from the working class. Gaskell’s most famous works include North and South, Cranford, and Wives and Daughters. She was also a close friend of fellow writer Charlotte Bronte, and after Bronte’s death, Gaskell wrote a biography of her.
